Bioindustrial Innovation Canada (BIC) is a nationally focused not-for-profit business accelerator that provides critical strategic investment, advice and services to business developers of clean, green and sustainable technologies. In 2015, BIC established the Centre for Commercialization of Sustainable Chemistry Innovation (COMM SCI) initiative, which acts as a hub for the commercialization of sustainable chemistry and bio-based innovation.

With a recent contribution from the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), BIC has developed the Ontario Bioindustrial Innovation Network (OBIN). OBIN will continue to support the growth of the Hybrid Chemistry Cluster in Sarnia-Lambton, Ont., and to enable to launch a new Sustainable Chemistry Cluster in the Eastern Ontario St. Lawrence Corridor region centred around Brockville and Maitland.

BIC welcomes Emma Kennedy as an engineer-in-training

Emma will be working on one of BIC’s COMM SCI projects, Imtex Membranes Corporation out of Mississauga, Ont. Emma will be working with Imtex as they work to build a demonstration plant in Sarnia-Lambton. She is currently working out of their pilot plant facility in Mississauga and is on track to move to Sarnia full time this December.

Emma holds a B.A.Sc. in Nanotechnology Engineering from the University of Waterloo. Her studies, completed in 2020, covered topics in materials, chemical, and electrical engineering, as well as innovative applications using nanotechnology. Through her co-op terms, Emma has held various engineering roles in the specialty chemicals and oil and gas industries in southern Ontario, including two work terms in Sarnia-Lambton.

“I am excited to have this role with BIC and return to Sarnia-Lambton,” says Kennedy. “It’s an excellent opportunity to work with promising new technologies with a strong sustainability focus. I look forward to combining my knowledge from my co-op roles and my education to bring ideas and support to BIC and Imtex.”
